The fossil fuel industry is destroying
the planet while making RECORD PROFITS :
WE MUST TAX THEM !
Coal, oil and gas companies are by far the main contributors to climate change, accounting for more than 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Not only do they pollute the planet massively, but they also continue to reap unprecedented profits. They keep ignoring the plight of populations from the Global South who bear the brunt of climate change impacts. In these regions, women are often the most affected.
It is time to END this impunity and make big polluters pay !
On June 22nd and 23rd, Emmanuel Macron will welcome Heads of State and Government for “The New Global Financing Pact” Summit. Global political leaders will talk about innovative sources of finance to support the response to the climate emergency in hardest-hit countries.
Now is the time for the French President to announce a tax on windfall profit of oil, gas and coal companies, but also to convince other world leaders to follow suit !
Support CARE’s call to action and urge Emmanuel Macron to act in order for fossil fuel companies to pay their CLIMATE DEBT.
the number of extreme weather events has doubled in the countries of the Global South
in developing countries linked to climate and weather-related events.
by extreme weather events are living in developing countries
due to climate impacts for 55 of the most vulnerable countries.
It is time for the fossil fuel industry to be held responsible for the emergency to which it has contributed so much. Its greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced, but this industry must above all pay off its climate debt.
Since the 1970s, these companies have publicly denied the catastrophic impact of their actions on the environment and health, while internal reports of their in-house scientists where aligned with IPCC* assessments.
This industry has chosen to ignore these reports at the expense of the Global South which suffer the consequences and bear the damages : destruction of school and roads, forced displacement of populations, loss of human lives…
The fossil fuel industry, thanks to extensive lobbying ressources, strongly defends its financial interests at the expense of populations who are most vulnerable to climate change impacts. In 2022, 636 fossil fuel lobbyists were invited to the COP 27 negotiating rooms. That’s 130 more than the previous year : an example that speaks volumes !
The law of the strongest prevail can not prevail over our future and that of our planet.
In 2022, at COP 27, governments decided to create a Loss and Damage Fund to provide a financial support to countries affected by irreversible climate change impacts. This was an important victory ! Taxing windfall profit of fossil fuel companies would contribute to secure part of the money needed to respond to population’s needs.
While the operationalization of this Loss and Damage Fund will be negotiated in the coming months. There is not one minute to lose ! It is necessary to identify now how to replenish this fund.
Governments, in particular from the global North, will have to unlock public money for this but the private sector must also pay its fair share. This is not about solidarity or charity but it is truly a debt they owe to the population from the global South.
Our lives are worth more than their profits !
