Coal, oil and gas companies are by far the main contributors to climate change, accounting for more than 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Not only do they pollute the planet massively, but they also continue to reap unprecedented profits. They keep ignoring the plight of populations from the Global South who bear the brunt of climate change impacts. In these regions, women are often the most affected.

It is time to END this impunity and make big polluters pay !

On June 22^nd and 23^rd, Emmanuel Macron will welcome Heads of State and Government for “The New Global Financing Pact” Summit. Global political leaders will talk about innovative sources of finance to support the response to the climate emergency in hardest-hit countries.

Now is the time for the French President to announce a tax on windfall profit of oil, gas and coal companies, but also to convince other world leaders to follow suit !

Dear President Macron,

On June 22 and 23, you will welcome in Paris the heads of state and government from around the world, as part of the Summit for a New Global Financial Deal.

Mr. President, now is the time to announce the tax on oil, gas and coal companies superprofits and to encourage other political leaders to follow. Supported by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, this tax is essential to achieve real climate justice and support the populations who suffer the consequences of climate change without being responsible for it.

It is time for the fossil fuel industry, the cause of more than 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions, to pay its climate debt ! Since the 1970s, they have been aware of the catastrophic impact of their actions on the environment and health, and continue as if nothing had happened. Not only do they massively pollute the planet and ignore the fate of the countries of the South, but they also continue to reap record profits !

In 20 years, the 55 countries most vulnerable to climate change have suffered a total of US$500 billion in losses. As The profits of the fossil companies over this same period could have covered 60 times this cost !

It's urgent, Mr. President! The implementation of the fund dedicated to loss and damage decided at COP27 in November 2022 will be negotiated in the coming months. Concrete solutions must be found to mobilize large financial volumes so it doesn’t become an empty shell. Taxing the superprofits of the fossil industries at 10% would be a good starting point.

Guardian of the Paris agreement and pioneer on several taxes, such as the commercial air tax, France is in a postion to change the situation.

Mr. President, I am counting on you to tax the superpolluters and put the value of human lives above their superprofits.
